This listing is for a lacquered tsunodaru double horned sake keg made around 50-60 years ago. It is made of wood and coated in vermillion and black lacquer with gold trim. Tsunodaru were traditionally used during auspicious occasions such as weddings and festivals. They have a long history, however its current form developed during the Edo period. Tsunodaru that we know today were based on the willow barrels used during the Muromachi period. At that time, barrels were made from willow because they were easy to process and did not leak liquid. However, during the Bunka-Bunsei period of the Edo period, as sake brewing and keg-making developed, the material changed from willow to cedar. Furthermore, the handle was shaped like a horn and painted with vermilion or black lacquer, giving birth to the type of barrel that we know today. The Tsunodaru in this listing was most likely used for a festival, the kanji on the side of the handle reads as ‘jinushi’ which roughly translates as head or main family. This particular tsunodaru would have been reserved for a family that has owned land in the area for quite a few generations. The family’s family crest can be found on the other handle.
