This listing is for a Kyo-ware yunomi made around 20 years ago by Uno Toru.  It is wheel-thrown and coated in pale blue matte celadon glaze and decorated with a combination of soft lines and indentations.  This is a beautiful example of celadon pottery, it fits comfortably in the hand and is suitable for any of the four seasons.  The stamp of the potter can be found just above the foot ring, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.

Uno Toru (1935-2014) was a Kyo-ware potter located in the Higashiyama pottery district of Kyoto City.  In 1956 he began studying under Kano Mitsuo, and he also studied under master potter Kusube Yaichi.  He became independent and established his own kiln in 1961.  During his career his work was selected for several prestigious exhibitions such as Nitten, and the Contemporary Crafts Exhibition.  He received the Nitten Special Selection Award twice, the Contemporary Crafts Exhibition Award, as well as the Minister of Education Award.  His work was selected for the Kyoto Prefectural Craft Design Exhibition, the Kyoto Prefectural Craft Art Exhibition, the Kyoto City Art Exhibition, the Asahi Contemporary Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Japanese Fine Art Exhibition, and the Japan New Crafts Exhibition.  Held solo exhibitions at Osaka Mitsukoshi and Ginza Kuroda Touen in Tokyo.  He was a member of the Seiyo Association, and was affiliated with Nitten members.  In a 2005 art yearbook an appraisal of his work reached 1,100,000 yen.  Uno’s graceful works have been exhibited in Germany and the United States.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and cannot be used in your own listings.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.

Celadon refers to a type of glaze as well as a specific type of ware, both are characterized by a very pale green, powder blue, or grey-blue colour. The colour largely depends on the presence of iron in the clay and of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze. Firing conditions in the kiln also play a big role in determining colour.
