This listing is for a set of Kiyomizu-ware five tea cups made around 10-20 years ago by Unraku Gama.  They are wheel-thrown and decorated with five different plant motifs over a light coloured background.  This set is made of high-fired stoneware and is suitable for daily use.  The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom of each cup and they come with their original paper storage box.

Unraku Gama was established 125 years ago in Kyoto by Unraku Saito I. All of their pottery is wheel-thrown, and each piece is painted by hand. Unraku tableware is fired at 1300 degrees in an electric kiln over a period of three days. The lengthy firing process gives Unraku pieces a special grey-green tinge known as ‘aomatto’ glaze. Unraku Gama is now in its third generation and headed by Unraku Saito III. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
