This listing is for a pair of Tokoname-ware yunomi tea cups made around 20 years ago by Unzen Gama. They are wheel-thrown and feature what is known as the neriage technique. Neriage refers to the technique of marbling of clays of contrasting colour when wheel throwing. In this case several colours of clay have been mixed together and the surface has been incised with vertical grooves revealing beautiful circular patterns in the clay below.  The interior of each cup is white, and the stamp of the kiln can be found near the bottom of each cup.  They come with their original signed wooden storage box.

Unzen Gama is a Tokoname-ware kiln located in Aichi Prefecture.  They mainly produce red shudoro pieces, neriage marbled clay pieces, slipware and unglazed mogake pieces that were wrapped in seaweed and fired.  They specialise in producing teaware and use a ke rokuro kick wheel for throwing.  They also use slip moulds to produce kyusu and yuzamashi, and their incised pieces are hand carved by a small team of specialists.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tokoname-ware refers to stoneware pottery made in Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture. This type of pottery has been in production for over 1000 years, and originally potters created religious items as well as tea utensils. Tokoname-ware is now more widely known for its pottery using red clay.
