This listing is for a vintage Akabeko made around 20 years ago. An akabeko is a toy made from papier-mâché that’s shaped and painted to look like a red oxen. The body is hollow and the head bobs up and down when moved. Akabeko originated in the Aizu region of Fukushima, and is probably one of the most recognizable folk crafts from all of Tohoku. The red colour is believed to be lucky and auspicious for warding off smallpox and other childhood illnesses. The akabeko in this listing has a tatami saddle, and its carrying gold rice bales, rice, and a straw hat on its back.

Condition
It’s in very good condition however the polka dot fabric has some discolouration, the lacquer on its head is a little cloudy, and there’s some minor surface wear.
