This listing is for a vintage Amida Nyorai Buddha made around 40-50 years ago.  The right hand of the statue is held in the Shuni mudra, which is formed by touching the tip of the middle finger to the tip of the thumb.  The Shuni mudra is the mudra of compassion, understanding and patience towards others.  He is standing on a lotus pedestal and wearing traditional robes with long drape.  The back is signed ‘Yamasei’, Yamasei are a family of mixed metal craftsmen in Takaoka city, Toyama.

Amida Nyorai is the Japanese translation of the Sanskrit name ‘Amitabha Tathagata’. According to legend Amida Nyorai  was once a king who rejected his throne and then became a Buddha by committing to forty eight vows.  He is known as the Buddha of infinite light, because it is thought that his radiance is infinite and can illuminate in ten directions without obstruction. He is also referred to as the Buddha of infinite life, because his lifespan is without limit.  He is often seated in lotus position on a jewel lotus.  The lotus is significant as it is a symbol of purity.

Takaoka city is the leading producer of copperware in all of Japan, its origins going back some 400 years to feudal times. They produce items for religious purposes, the tea ceremony, as well as pots and pans for daily use. Manufacturing involves several stages beginning with the making of moulds in either wax or resin. This is followed by casting via the lost-wax process, and then finishing and colouring. During the colouring process other metals may be added and lacquer is sometimes added to the base. All these processes combined create Japan’s finest copperware, all done by highly skilled master craftsmen.
