This listing is for a vintage samurai warrior Kabuto helmet which is typically displayed during the annual Children’s Day celebration. It was made around 40 years ago and comes complete with a beautiful black lacquered chest. It is a carefully crafted piece, complete with metal trim and a small golden dragon that attaches to the top.  **Please read the ‘Condition’ part of the listing for more information about the dragon. Orange coloured silk cord has been woven around the back of the helmet, and the helmet comes with a mounting stand and silk cloth. Several parts are detached for easy storage, and there’s a paper box to protect the chest and its contents.

On May 5th Children’s Day is celebrated all over Japan. It is a day set aside to celebrate children’s health and happiness. Traditionally the day was just for boys, and families with at least one son would display kabuto and wish for their health and prosperity. During the Edo period this day was to encourage boys to become courageous like samurai.

Condition

It’s in very good condition overall, however the dragon is missing the part that slots into the front of the helmet, and there’s slight patina on the ‘antlers’.  The dragon will need something reattached to the bottom so it can slot back in, unfortunately the original part is long gone.  There are scratches and some scuffing on the lacquer chest, some parts of the lacquer is discoloured, patina on some of the gold coloured parts, and the lacquer is worn and flaking in places (mainly on the legs and along the edges).  There’s also a gap in the wood in the bottom of the box.  The corners are busted on the lid of the outer paper box as well as other general wear.
