This listing is for a traditional Iwami-ware pickling pot with lid made around 40 years ago. It is quite robust, and glazed with reddish brown ‘kimachi’ enamel.  Iwami-ware pickling pots are durable, have low water absorbency and are resistant to salt and acid. This piece primarily functions as a fermentation crock, and is generally used for preserving plums and rice bran pickles.

Iwami-ware refers to pottery produced in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture.  Iwami-ware is said to have started around 1763, and has a history of over 250 years.  Iwami is famous for its large reddish-brown water storage water jars called ‘hando'.  During the Meiji era houses were not equipped with running water, so every house had a large hando storage pot.  They were and highly valued for their sturdy and durable construction, and at that time were in very high demand.  Demand gradually dwindled around the middle of the Showa period, so kilns switched to producing smaller items such as teapots, tea utensils, and tableware.  Iwami-ware was designated as a National Traditional Craft in July 1994.
