This listing is for a wooden urushi lacquerware kogo made around 20 years ago. It is made of karaki wood and carved to resemble an eggplant, and finished with clear lacquer. Wooden kogo are intended for use during summer and for woodchip incense, however its nice round shape makes it perfect for holding kneaded incense as well. This particular case has a nice open shape on the interior making it roomy enough for the woodchip type.
Kogo are for holding incense during the tea ceremony. Kogo vary depending on the season. In summer wooden kogo are used for holding chips of incense wood, and in winter ceramic kogo are used for holding kneaded incense intended for the hearth. During the tea ceremony, incense is added to the charcoal fire during the charcoal-laying procedure.
