This listing is for a ‘kibi ushi’ folk toy from Tsuyama city in Okayama.  It is made of bamboo and features a tatami saddle as well as fabric and string trim.  This piece is quite old, and its natural bamboo colour.  Kibi ushi are usually painted black, this one is a little more unusual.  Please read below regarding the condition of the item, and please check the last three photos.

Tsuyama city is in Okyama is famous for its bamboo crafts, especially ‘Kibi Ushi’ bamboo cows.  Kibi Ushi are folk toys modelled on the wagyu beef cattle raised in Sakushu in north-eastern Okayama Prefecture.  The first kibu ushi was made in 1955, and since then artisans have expanded their range to include the 12 animals belonging to the Chinese and Japanese horoscope.  Each critter is made from cut rings of bamboo and hand-painted one by one.  Tsuyama Folk Art Company is one of the original bamboo crafts workshops in Tsuyama, and belongs to the Shiraishi family.  It was established by Shiraishi Yasutaro and is now run by his son Yasushi (b.1953). In 1962 the Showa emperor visited Okayama and purchased a kibi ushi from the Shiraishi workshop, resulting in a sharp rise in popularity.    **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Condition

Overall it’s in decent condition however it has a few problems.  One horn is broken off and replaced with a much smaller piece of wood, and the fabric and string trim is faded and fraying.  A piece of the fabric has become unstuck and is hanging from the neck of the cow.
