This listing is for a vintage Korean celadon kogo made around 20 years ago.  It is wheel-thrown and the lid is decorated with a ring of flowers and two cranes flying among the clouds. The crane is a well-known symbol of harmony in Korea, and is often used to decorate pottery pieces.  Its size and shape is suitable for holding both woodchip and kneaded incense, though pottery kogo are typically used for kneaded incense during the cooler months. The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom.

Celadon refers to a type of glaze as well as specific type of ware, and it was the most common type of pottery produced in Korea during the Koryo Dynasty. Celadon is often a very pale grey-green colour, however in Korea they produce wares with a bluish-green ‘kingfisher’ colour. The actual colour all depends on the amount of iron in the clay, as well as the presence of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze. Firing conditions inside of the kiln also play a large role in determining the end result.

Kogo are for holding incense during the tea ceremony. Kogo vary depending on the season. In summer wooden kogo are used for holding chips of incense wood, and in winter ceramic kogo are used for holding kneaded incense intended for the hearth. During the tea ceremony, incense is added to the charcoal fire during the charcoal-laying procedure.
