This listing is for a metal rabbit okimono made around 40-50 years ago.  It is hollow and the exterior is coated with brown coloured enamel.  This piece was most likely made to commemorate the Year of the Rabbit back in either 1963 or 1975, however it would also make a nice ornament to display in autumn.  During autumn, Japan celebrates the harvest moon festival known as tsukimi. When the harvest moon appears, people gaze up at the sky hoping to catch a glimpse of the rabbit that lives on the moon. On a clear night, you can make out the shape of a rabbit busy pounding mochi with a mallet. Tsukimi was traditionally for giving thanks for bountiful harvests, mochi and vegetables were offered to the moon in return for successful crops the following year.

Japanese okimono figurines are decorative items used for display purposes. Junishi okimono are those commemorating the twelve animals and mythological beasts from the astrological calendar. The Japanese astrological calendar is known as eto, and the twelve creatures are called junishi. The Zodiac’s popularity peaked during the Edo Era, and it was then that junishi okimono production became more widespread. These days, potters and production kilns produce hundreds of junishi each year to welcome the coming New Year. These are often displayed in shops, restaurants, people’s homes, and in tea rooms.
