This listing is for a signed sumi-e ink and wash shikishi. The painting depicts a snake and was most likely made to commemorate the Year of the Snake around 30-40 years ago.  Fifteen hundred years ago, during the Jin Dynasty, there was a Chinese scholar who wrote a book called ‘The Records of the Gods of War’.  It tells the story of a white snake helping a man and giving him a great deal of wealth and a beautiful hoju jewel in return for his kindness.  Since ancient times there have been various legends portraying snakes as wise, and it is thought that keeping one as a talisman will bring you good luck.

It is spotty, the corners are bent, and the edges are a little rough/creased here and there.
