This listing is for a vintage Wakasa lacquerware sweets bowl made around 30-40 years ago. The base of this particular bowl consists of a combination of wood powder with resin - resin items are ideal for daily use because they are very strong and hard to break. The base is coated with black lacquer on the exterior and red on the interior. The exterior also features eggshells and mother of pearl. The bowl is intended for serving sweets however it would also make a wonderful fruit bowl. It comes with a Japanese language profile paper about Wakasa lacquerware.
Wakasa is a lacquer technique from Fukui Prefecture which started in the early Edo period. The process is a very long and arduous one as it involves the sanding and relacquering of multiple layers. The process is repeated over and over and is nothing short of painstaking. The fully decorated surface is meant to capture the beauty of the ocean floor through various materials such as eggshells, mother of pearl, pine needles, and cypress needles. These materials are added once a smooth even base has been created. This part of the process requires great skill and patience for if the lacquer hardens too quickly, the pattern won’t emerge clearly. Craftsmen generally complete this part of the process during the cold winter months when the low humidity and temperatures slow down the hardening process. It takes up to one year to finish one piece.
