This listing is for a konoha-tenmoku chawan made around 20 years ago by Tokyo based potter, Watanabe Aoi. It is wheel-thrown and the flat hira type used during the summer season. Hira chawan are shallow bowls with low sides designed to cool tea down faster. Also hira chawan are usually beautifully decorated on the interior as this part is readily seen by the tea drinker. The bowl in this listing features glossy dark coloured glaze over a light coloured stoneware base, and the interior is decorated with leaf imprints. Konoha-tenmoku means leaf tenmoku, and it is a pattern created by attaching leaves directly to the glaze prior to firing. During firing the leaves turn to ash, which then melts into the glaze and creates a leaf pattern. This technique was developed in Jiangxi Province in southern China during the Song dynasty. It is an incredibly difficult technique to master and only a few kilns in Japan are proficient at it. The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box for this one.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Tenmoku is the Japanese word for a specific type of pottery that originated in China during the Song dynasty. There are two variations: the yohen hare’s fur type, and the yuteki oil spot variety. Tenmoku chawan are typically well-shaped with an indented finger groove just below the rim. Also the rims are sometimes trimmed with a band of metal, or more commonly gold or silver enamel. Tenmoku pieces are high-fired and cooled quickly, resulting in a thick gathering of glaze on the lower part of the bowl. Also tenmoku pieces are not associated with just one type of ware, however the most common pieces tend to be Seto, Kyo, or Satsuma-ware.
