This listing is for a Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Watanabe Keiho.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with a rat perched on top of an uchide-no-kozuchi mallet of fortune.  It is believed that striking an uchide-no-kozuchi will bring anything you wish for, thus making it a common sight at New Year.   The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box.

Watanabe Keiho (b.1937 in Hokkaido) is a Kyo-ware potter and current master of Keiho Gama.  He studied and worked at Unraku Gama for fifteen years and in 1983 he opened Keiho Gama.  Watanabe specialises in teaware and tableware, and his teaware designs are inspired by master potter Kenzan Ogata.  He primarily decorates with iron based glaze and his brushwork has a lively and spontaneous appearance.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
