This listing is for a Mumyoi-ware yunomi made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Watanabe Touzo.  It is wheel thrown and features a wax relief bamboo pattern on the front.  This piece is made of high fired clay and is suitable for daily use.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper. 

Watanabe Touzo (b.1938) is a Mumyoi-ware potter and 4th generation master of Kunimi Gama. His father was the third generation master of the family kiln, and Watanabe took over after his father’s passing. In 1960 he began studying under master potter Miyanohara Ken, and in 1962 his work was selected for the prestigious Nitten Exhibition. His work has been chosen for Nitten a total of nine times during his career. In 1992 Prince and Princess Akishino visited Kunimi Gama, where he performed a pottery demonstration for them. In 2004 he became the 6th generation president of the Toto Association, and he also served as a member of the Japan Contemporary Art Craft Association. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mumyoi-ware refers to the red clay pottery produced on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. The clay has a high iron content and is collected from the Aikawa gold mine and surrounding mountains. Originally Mumyoi-ware was a mix of red and yellow clay. However a potter named Jozan Miura studied the art of Yixing teapot making and went onto develop his own style of tea ware using just red clay. This explains why Mumyoi-ware closely resembles Chinese Yi Xing teapot production.
