This listing is for a reasonably large chamfered Bizen-ware tokkuri made around 5 years ago by Christopher Ravenhall.  It is wood-fired and the exterior is scorched a deep red colour.  The bottom also features red streaks known as hidasuki. Hidasuki refers to the process of wrapping wares with cords of straw, which are then fired off resulting brilliant shades of red.  This piece is contemporary in style and would also make a wonderful vase.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box for this one.

Christopher Ravenhall (b.1968) is a Bizen-ware potter originally from Derbyshire in the UK.  He came to Japan in 1989 and began studying under Mamoru Taku.  In 1994 he joined Ichiyo Gama and then established his own kiln in 1999.  He fires in an underground tunnel kiln and primarily produces teaware and tableware.  His work can be found in galleries across Japan and he is well respected in the Bizen community of potters.  You can learn more about the potter and his philosophy via this Youtube video:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=7pC-ZSBMQoM

Bizen-ware is generally known for its iron-like hardness, simple unglazed texture, and distinctive markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Because of the clay composition, Bizen pottery is fired slowly over a long period of time. Firings take place only once or twice a year. They require the wood fire to be kept burning for 10-14 days, which involves long hours and tonnes of wood. Bizen clay is dug up from rice fields and this iron rich clay is what gives most Bizen-ware its dark colours, though, a few potters prefer to use lighter mountain clay.
