This listing is for a Yakushima-ware vase made around 30-40 years ago by the Yakushima Pottery Cooperative.  It is wheel-thrown and the front features a patch of light coloured natural ash glaze.  The opening is small and only wide enough to accommodate a few thin stemmed flowers, making it ideal for a tearoom setting.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original wooden storage box.  The inscription under the lid indicates that this piece was given as a gift to commemorate the completion of a new company building.  This piece also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about Yakushima-ware, as well as a colour pamphlet. 

Yakushima-ware refers to yakishime pieces produced on Yakushima Island south of Kagoshima in Kyushu. Yakishime is unglazed, unpatterned pottery that is fired at high temperatures in noborigama climbing kilns that take advantage of the slopes found at the foot of mountains.  Yakushima pieces are made with iron-rich red clay and fired with abundant firewood.  Yakushima pottery is said to embody the spirit of ancient times and seeks to express beauty through its simplicity. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
