This listing is for a wooden toothpick holder from the scenic Kiso Valley district in Nagano Prefecture.  It is carved to resemble an eggplant and the exterior is coated in lacquer.  This particular item is better suited for holding long toothpicks, though shorter ones should shake out just fine.  Eggplant tableware is popular because the humble eggplant happens to be one of Japan’s more popular summer vegetables, and this is because they are believed to have a cooling effect on the body.
