This listing is for a wooden jubako made around 40 years ago. It consists of two tiers and is decorated with a nandina berry pattern. The nandina bush bears clusters of berries which Japanese people commonly associate with winter. In Japanese language the word nandina also means hardship, so the nandina plant is thought to have the power to drive misfortune away. The plant appears as a motif in family crests, art and textile design, but is probably best known for its use in New Year’s arrangements where it symbolises longevity.  The small sticker on the bottom says that it is coated with urethane for durability, and the colour of the coating is ‘sakura’.  The beautiful grain of the wood is clearly visible and it’s a fairly solid piece.  It comes with its original paper storage box.

Sizes

Paper Box:  H.13.5cm (5.3”) x 22cm (8.6”) x 22cm (8.6”)

Jubako:  H.12cm (4.7”) x 19.7cm (7.7”) x 19.7cm (7.7”)

Condition

It’s in very good condition aside from light scratches, some wear along the edges, and a spot of coating missing under the lid.  The top tier has the most amounts of scratches, as well as some scuffing.  The bottom of the jubako has light scratches, a nick in the wood, and a small worn label.  The paper box is discoloured and the lid had busted corners.
