This listing is for a sweet little rabbit kogo made around 20 years ago by Yakushi Gama. The twelve animals and mythological beasts of the Japanese astrological calendar are known as junishi in Japanese. Junishi kogo are very popular and they are usually decorated with auspicious symbols relating to luck and longevity, and they often feature bright colours painted with either glaze or gesso. The kogo in this listing is suited to holding kneaded incense, although the woodchip type may also be possible. Earthenware kogo are generally intended for holding kneaded incense during the cooler months. It comes with its original paper box, please read below regarding the condition of both items.
Yakushi Gama is a major producer of decorative items such junishi, figurines, maneki-neko, dolls and lucky charms. They have been in the business since the late Edo Period, and they mainly use slip casting to produce decorative items for New Year and other special occasions. Kogo are for holding incense during the tea ceremony. Kogo vary depending on the season. In summer wooden kogo are used for holding chips of incense wood, and in winter ceramic kogo are used for holding kneaded incense intended for the hearth. During the tea ceremony, incense is added to the charcoal fire during the charcoal-laying procedure.

Condition
It’s in very good condition aside from some discolouration and marks where it has come into contact with dark coloured paint, also the box is lightly discoloured and the lid has busted corners.
