Yamada Masakazu (b.1951) is a Mino-ware potter and current master of Hakusan Gama located in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.  In 1969 he graduated from Gifu Prefectural Tajimi Technical High School and began to work as a potter.  In 1981 his work was selected for the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition (the first of many selections), as well as the Chunichi International Ceramic Art Exhibition (also the first of many selections).  In 1982 he received the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition Excellence Award, and in 1983 his work was selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (ten more times after this).  In 1996 he received the Mino Ceramic Art Exhibition Encouragement Award, and then became a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association.  He also serves as Secretary of the Tokai Branch of the Japan Crafts Association, and he is the current Director of the Mino Ceramics Association.  He mainly produces teaware and tableware using Shino, Oribe and Kiseto glazes, and he fires his work in a gas kiln.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mino-ware refers to pottery produced in what was formerly the old Mino Province. Early examples of Mino-ware were predominantly ash-glazed stoneware pieces. Later however the use of the potter’s wheel, as well as a greater variety of glazes, began to characterize what is often thought to ideally represent Mino pottery today. Larger production kilns like Kozangama in Gifu Prefecture produce wares similar to Imari and Arita-ware. Various other kilns specialize in producing budget priced tableware, along with high end wares for various brand name stores and franchises around the country such as Tachikichi in Kyoto.

Oribe-ware uses blue or green copper glazes and often features simple design motifs such as squares, rectangles, and circles. It takes its name from Furuta Oribe, a tea master and pupil of Sen Rikyu. For Japanese potters, it was the first use of colour in the glazing of stoneware, and at the time was said to have a very simple and modernistic look about it. These days Oribe-ware still enjoys much popularity, with plates, bowls, and cups commonly produced in and around the Seto area.
