This listing is for a Ki-seto chawan made around 30 years ago by Yamaguchi Shigeru. It features a wonderful glossy glaze and green accents which are achieved through oxidization. Ki-Seto is reputed to be an extremely difficult style to master, so it takes years of practice to achieve an even half decent firing of useable wares. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.
Yamaguchi Shigeru (b.1925) was an Akazu-ware potter who was born in Seto city in Aichi Prefecture. He studied under his father, Yamaguchi Jotetsu I, and specialised in producing teaware. His work consists of Ki-Seto, Shino, Seto-Guro, and Oribe style pieces. His older brother inherited the title of Jotetsu II (1920-1999), and both potters are known for their distinctive glazes and innovative designs. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Akazu-ware refers to pottery from Aichi Prefecture and is a general term to describe Oribe, Shino, Ofuke, Ki-Seto, Ko-Seto, Tetsuyu and Kaiyu glazes. These seven glazes are specifically attributed to this region, and they are made using local materials sourced from the Seto region. All of the ingredients are natural, and all use clay sourced from the Seto hills. The Kato family is considered to be the pioneers of this type of ware.
