This listing is for a Kuwana lacquered tray made around 20 years ago by Yamamoto Suisho VI.  Kuwana trays are typically finished using kijiro-nuri lacquer coating method and have a red edge, however the tray in this listing consists of clear lacquer over a wood base.  The turnip decoration has been used since the Edo period when Matsudaira Sadanobu had Tani Buncho decorated a tray with turnips as a gift to the shogun.  This piece is beautifully made and appears to have had little use if any.  It comes with its original paper storage box, as well as a Japanese language profile paper.

Yamamoto Suisho VI (b.1950) is a lacquerware artisan born into the Yamamoto family of lacquer artists.  In 1987 his work was selected for the 4th Japanese Traditional Lacquering Exhibition, and in 1996 his work was selected for the Tanko Biennale Open Call Exhibition.  In March 2000 his Ijiiji-nuri Kuwana tray was certified as a Mie Prefecture designated craft, and he did some lacquer work at the home of major leaguer Ichiro Suzuki.  In October 2005 he was certified as a Kuwana City Intangible Cultural Property for lacquering craft, and in 2006 he presented an iro to her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado.  In March 2009 he received the Mie Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, and in 2010 he donated one of his Kuwana trays to Kuwana city.  He also received the Kuwana City Cultural Achievement Award and held a solo exhibition at Takashimaya department store in Nagoya.  In 2012 he presented a Kuwana tray to Ise Jingu shrine, as well as a tray illustrated with sea bream to Jingu Museum.  Two of his Kuwana dried sweets trays were placed at Shikinen Sengu Memorial Sengu Museum at Ise Jingu the same year.  Yamamoto is certified as a Kuwana City Intangible Cultural Property Technology Holder, and he belongs to the Tokai Branch of the Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition.  He is a permanent member of the Kuwana Citizens Exhibition Committee, and he is a member of the judging committee.  Yamamoto studies tea practice and produces wares belonging to the Enshu style of tea ceremony.  He frequently conducts workshops and lectures about lacquerware and tea ceremony.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
