This listing is for an attractive Hagi-ware chawan made by veteran potter Yamane Seigan. It features a beautiful three-colour glaze combination over a gritty stoneware base. The rim has been dipped in a soft white glaze, which has gracefully dripped down the sides, blending with the underlying hues to create a natural, fluid effect. The simple shape and slightly raised foot makes it a very practical bowl for daily use. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box for this one. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP AND BAMBOO TEA WHISK ARE NOT INCLUDED.
Yamane Seigan (b.1952) was born in Hagi city and works out of Kousaian Gama. He is self taught and opened his kiln back in 1987, producing both teaware and tableware. He created an original blue ‘ao Hagi’ glaze which was coined ‘Seigan Blue’. He has held several solo exhibitions and is a full time member of the Hagi Pottery Association. Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
