This listing is for a Tajima-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by Yamane Tsuyoshi.  It is wheel-thrown and made of high-fired stoneware coated in light coloured slip.  The interior features a momiji leaf imprint, and the bowl has a nice deep shape.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with a paper storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper.

Yamane Tsuyoshi (1932-2003) was a Tajima-ware potter and first generation master of Sasaura Gama.  He was originally an elementary school teacher but in 1976 he decided to change career paths and built an underground tunnel kiln in the Sasaura district of Kinosaki.  Later he added a noborigama climbing kiln, and he also used an electric kiln to fire tableware.  His niece Odagaki Kasumi (b.1960) studied under him and became the second generation master after Yamane’s passing in 2003.  She added a studio to the existing kiln and conducts lessons for visitors from the neighbouring onsen town.  Odagaki also works at Kajika Gama located at Kajika Tea House in the Kinosaki onsen resort area.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tajima-ware refers to pottery produced in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture.  It is earthy and warm, and it’s made using clay similar to Shigaraki.  Tajima-ware consists of unglazed yakishime pieces and those coated in slip, as well as larger wood-fired wares coated in natural ash glaze.  Tableware and chawan feature imprints of leaves and grass, and damp unfired greenware is sometimes wrapped in cloth to create a fine texture on the exterior.   Sasaura Gama is representative of Tajima-ware and can be freely toured by visitors.
