This listing is for a Yasaka-ware futaoki made around 20 years ago and signed ‘Yasaka-yaki’.  A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki featured in this listing is moulded to resemble a sanpo, and its decorated with an ise ebi shrimp motif. A sanpo is a small portable altar that is used for making offerings, such as for the moon viewing festival in September/October. Ise ebi symbolize longevity, and this is because the back of a lobster is curled just like an elderly person.  The motif is often used to decorate New Year teaware in the hope that it will bring long life.  The “Yasaka Yaki” signature can be found near the base, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.

Yasaka-ware refers to raku-ware produced in the Gion/Yasaka shrine district in Kyoto.  It has the same characteristics as ordinary Raku-ware, just the name specifies which part of Kyoto it was made.  It is hand shaped rather than wheel-thrown, and is delicate and lightweight just like Raku. Yasaka-ware is always signed Yasaka-yaki, there is no kiln or potter name.
