This listing is for a ‘kami sakazuki ‘ sake cup from Yasukuni Shrine.  A kami sakazuki is a sacred sake cup purchased at shrines.  They are considered auspicious and should be purchased when you make a special prayer at a shrine.  If your prayer is realised, you use the cup to make an offering in a show of gratitude to the gods.  The cup in this listing is made of unglazed porcelain and is decorated with a single cherry blossom and the imperial chrysanthemum.  It is stamped on the bottom and comes with its original paper storage box.  There are 4 cups available. 

Yasukuni is a Shinto-style shrine commemorating Japan’s war dead, and it is also famous for its cherry blossoms.  There are around 600 cherry blossoms on the shrine grounds making it a very popular spot for blossom viewing each spring.  During the war young cadets were celebrated as cherry blossoms, a delicate flower that is known for its fleeting existence.  Those who were sent to battle were expected to become ‘falling sakura petals’ in the name of the emperor.
