This listing is for a vintage Mumyoi-ware chawan made around 30-40 years ago by Yoshisue Gama.  It is wheel-thrown and made using smooth iron-rich clay.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed paper storage box.  It also comes with a stamped yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Yoshisue Gama is a Mumyoi-ware kiln located in the centre of Sado Island in Kanai town (now Sado city).  Kanai sits on a plain surrounded by rice paddies, much of the clay used by Yoshisue kiln is sourced from rice fields and nearby mountains.  They also have a pottery store in Ryotsu city which is now a part of Sado city.  Yoshisue kiln mainly produces tableware as well as teaware, vases, and sake vessels.  Their work also comes with a signed paper box (they don’t use wooden tomobako), and a brief history of Mumyoi-ware.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mumyoi-ware refers to the red clay pottery produced on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. The clay has a high iron content and is collected from the Aikawa gold mine and surrounding mountains. Originally Mumyoi-ware was a mix of red and yellow clay. However a potter named Jozan Miura studied the art of Yixing teapot making and went onto develop his own style of tea ware using just red clay. This explains why Mumyoi-ware closely resembles Chinese Yi Xing teapot production.
