This listing is for a vintage Daruma from Zuiganji temple in Miyagi Prefecture.  Zuiganji was founded during the Heian period by Jikaku Daishi in 828CE.  Jikaku studied Buddhism in China during the Tang dynasty, and became the third abbot of the Tendai sect at Enryakuji Temple after he returned to Japan.  He was responsible for the construction of buildings to store the sutras and religious items that he brought back from China.  Visitors to Zuiganji can purchase wooden Daruma as souvenirs, as well as small Daruma containing omikuji fortune slips.  The Daruma in this listing was most likely purchased as a souvenir, and the writing on the front reads as ‘Zuiganji’.  The stamp of the craftsperson can be found on the bottom.
