This listing is for a delightful Kiyomizu-ware chawan made around 10 years ago by Zuiko Gama in Kyoto.  It is wheel-thrown and decorated with colourful momiji leaves over a light coloured base.  Parts of the design are raised so this piece has a slight texture to it.  The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original paper storage box.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Zuiko Gama is a Kiyomizu-ware kiln known for its high quality tableware, and it’s currently in its third generation.   It is one of the few studios in Japan to offer both pottery and glassware.  Zuiko Gama’s glassware is high in demand because it is completely hand-painted, and the process does not involve stencils or decals.  They have developed a technique where a thin layer of melted adhesive is applied to the surface, thus allowing designs to be freely painted without dust and hand grease interrupting the process.  They specialize in seasonal designs, their tall beer glasses featuring flowers according to calendar months are an all time favourite and are popular as birthday gifts.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
